We are on the edge of Monsal Dale and situated up a quiet country lane, on a sunny south facing hillside, with outstanding views across open landscapes, high above Taddington Dale.
It is an idyllic setting, surrounded by fields and woodland, providing peace and tranquillity yet central to all the attractions of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Maigold cottage is a lovely property, situated high on the hill alongside several other cottages. It is in a beautifully peaceful setting without feeling isolated. A visitor can imagine being in a little farming community. The interior of the property has been kept at a very high standard with comfortable furnishings and excellent beds.

Our family group of 7 plus a Labrador stayed in Albertine Barn for a long weekend. The cottage was just what we were hoping for. It was clean, spacious, fully equipped, comfortable and was in a beautiful location with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Perfect accommodation and to top it all we had beautiful weather!

We had a lovely stay in Maigold Cottage with our family, including baby and dog. The cottage is beautifully furnished and comfortable, and the living room is much larger than the pictures suggest – a really welcome surprise for when the whole family is together. We know the area well already so had no concerns on location, there’s great walks, climbing and other activities in the area and Bakewell and Buxton are both a short drive away. We had a lovely stay and would definitely come again. Hide

Thank you for a really wonderful stay at Maigold Cottage, we really enjoyed our holiday and didn’t want to leave! The cottage is much bigger than we had thought from the pictures and was really warm and comfortable. We stayed with our toddler and Maigold was very handy because it was all on one level, so no stairs to worry about, and we were able to use the highchair and travel cot which were in the cottage. Our dog also had a wonderful time with the cosy fire in the living room and lots of beautiful walks from the cottage and also a short car drive away. There are plenty of pushchair friendly and dog friendly walks within the local area and we walked along part of the Monsal trail and Tissington trail easily with our pushchair. Julie and Brian live next to Maigold and were available to welcome us to the property and also offer advice when required; we very much appreciated Brian providing us with a map and advice on walks available from the cottage. We hope to return to stay at Maigold soon, and would recommend Middle Farm Holiday Cottages to others who are seeking a quiet, relaxing holiday in the Peak District
We stayed at Maigold Cottage over Christmas 2016. The cottage is much larger than it looks in the photographs on the owners website. It is very well equipped and a very comfortable place to stay in, a good rural location between Buxton and Bakewell. The owners, Brian & Julie, were very helpful and friendly during our stay and quickly sorted a slight issue with the wifi connection upon arrival and provided us with top ups of logs for the logburner. All in all, we would highly recommend Maigold Cottage as a place to stay for relaxing or taking advantage ( as we did ) of the many great walks in the surrounding area.
We had a wonderful week at Albertine Barn. 2 families with 4 children in total (1 baby). The barn was spacious, clean and equipped with everything we needed. The owners were so friendly and helpful, they were around if we needed them but not at all intrusive. We all loved it. Walks from the doorstep and close enough to other activities so as not to spend ages driving around. We will absolutely be back! Thank you for a great week!
Wonderful place for a large family gathering. As a family of twelve, including four children, we found both Albertine and Maigold were immaculate, well thought out and we had everything we needed for our stay. The scenery was stunning, and we were able to go on a couple of long walks. The Manners pub in Bakewell comfortably seated all twelve of us for lunch on the Saturday (Best to Pre-Book) food was delicious and hot! Cromford Canal, (not too far away) is a nice trip to go on…. narrow Boat rides on certain days, lovely. We ended our visit with a trip to Chatsworth which is beautiful. Would love to come again.
The care at Maigold starts from the moment you book with welcoming e-mails that let you know all will be well for your stay. We were warmly greeted by Julie on arrival and she showed us into the cottage. It was spotlessly clean, light and airy with pretty and well cared for furnishings. It has everything you need for a self catering holiday with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable living room with tv DVD player and a piano! The cottage is just 10 minutes away from Bakewell, a source of plentiful bakeries, a good butchers and a well-stocked Co-op. There were chocolates on the pillows and a welcome tray of tea, coffee, sugar and locally made fudge. There were also fresh flowers on the table. There was lots of information to help us plan our stay and it this is an ideal base for walking and for visiting Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House. Sadly the weather was rather unkind but it was lovely to have a peaceful, comfortable and cosy base to return to in the afternoon. We look forward to staying again in the future.
Maigold is much more spacious than it looks in the pictures. I’d also missed the fact it has a piano, which was a lovely treat! It is in a wonderful, quiet setting, whilst not being isolated, as the owners’ cottage and other rental cottage are next door. It is in a beautiful steep-sided valley, hard to do justice to it in photos, but it makes for great post-dinner walks from the front door in the evenings, with rabbits hopping around the hillside, and the children loved finding a secret rope swing on a hill nearby. Brushfield is just two minutes off a main road (but not near enough for any road noise) so there is very easy access to key places of interest. Brian and Julie were very helpful and available for any queries as needed.
Wonderful week, in a wonderful location with my wonderful family. We couldn’t have asked for more. The accommodation was first rate. The large kitchen and lounge coped easily with our large group. The quiet presence of the hosts and their helpfulness was really appreciated. I’d certainly recommend this venue.
If you are looking for somewhere peaceful, with character, private yet a drive away from some of the rural and historical attractions of the Peak District then these cottages would be perfect for you. We stayed in the Maigold cottage and were impressed with how spacious yet cosy it was. There are some lovely views and although we didn’t go out (too cosy and warm inside! ) there are plenty of walks to do. It was just what we needed to relax and unwind, so quiet but with all the comforts and mod cons you would need to make your stay a homely one. Julie and Brian, the owners are really welcoming and friendly and I loved that there was a Christmas tree inside and outside the cottage which was such a nice thought. We will definitely be back!
We spent Christmas 2015 in the Albertine Barn and had a lovely time. The barn had everything we needed and the kitchen and lounge were a great size for 6 adults and a toddler with a few extra family who came for Christmas dinner. Julie & Brian were very welcoming and on hand for questions during our stay and also before we arrived. The location is great, in between Buxton and Bakewell and a short 10 min drive to either. The setting is beautiful with fantastic views over the Peak District. We hope to return soon.
Maigold is a Derbyshire gem! It is in a beautiful, quiet location, with a fabulous large country kitchen and a big but cosy sitting room. None of these pokey kitchens or small receptions rooms that you find in so many cottages of a similar price. The cottage is on one level, well-maintained, and full of character. The beds are comfy, the welcome exceptionally warm, and the information available about places to visit in the area is as good as any tourist office. It is a wonderful centre to explore the Peak District, with lots of FABULOUS walks – both up on the peaks and down in the dales – and lots of places of interest including Bakewell Market, the theatre in Buxton, Hardwick Hall and Chatsworth. Not to mention the wonderful local pubs, tea rooms and coffee shops! You couldn’t wish for a nicer cottage – or a nicer area to explore. We will be back!
This cottage is pretty on the outside, with a lovely yellow rose climbing over the entrance, and a sun trap patio in the corner. The sitting rooms French windows open onto the patio and you can see the hills and fields in the distance. A very restful and quiet place. My mum and I felt very much at home here, and the owners were very friendly, and helpful. Mum particularly enjoyed everything being on ground floor level and the separate shower room that was NOT over the bath! The cottage was well looked after and nice and light with lots of windows and spacious rooms. The sitting room and the whole cottage was much larger than I expected, with comfortable seating and a well equipped kitchen. We would both love to stay there again and would highly recommend it to friends.
Maigold Cottage was a home away from home, warm and welcoming, as were the owners, Julie and Brian. The views from the doorstep were stunning and the opportunity to walk from the cottage along the Wye river valley or to Monsal Head were amazing! It was also easy driving distance to Buxton, Bakewell, Chatsworth, Castleton and other lovely locations in the Peak District. We visited during half term and are lucky that our kids like walking so we managed to go on walks 4 days out of the 6 we were there, including walks over Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, around Chatsworth estate, from Peak Forest and along to Monsal Head. The listing description was accurate, the property was clean and very well equipped and I would thoroughly recommend the cottage and location. We found some lovely places to eat, including the No. 6 Tearooms in Buxton, great if you need gluten free options!
We loved our stay here, it’s a very spacious cottage with large rooms throughout but still beautifully snug and cosy. It’s in a very peaceful location with no road noise and in a scenic setting but shops/pubs are just a few miles away. We particularly enjoyed the well-marked walks that start right from the door. Thanks to Julie and Brian for being so welcoming.
Maigold is a beautiful, charming, clean and spacious cottage, set in a wonderful, peaceful location overlooking the Wye valley and open countryside. There are good walks from the door with Millers Dale and Monsal Head within easy reach. Bakewell is less than 10 minutes’ drive away. The owners Brian and Julie are lovely hosts who made us feel very welcome on the two occasions we have visited. We will certainly be returning and will also be encouraging friends to enjoy a stay in this lovely cottage.
Maigold cottage is a really well equipped haven in a beautiful setting. All home comforts have been thought of and the log burner was lovely and cosy in the Feb chilly weather. The setting is secluded with picturesque views, but close to local amenities and attractions. We hope to return to do more walking!
Beautiful surroundings. Excellent well-appointed barn conversion with everything you could want for a family get away! The property was lovely and clean, well maintained and owners on site were there to greet and on hand in case of issues but then left you alone. Tranquil setting but excellently placed for all the delights of the Peak District. Minutes from the main A6 taking you to Bakewell and Buxton, but never would have guessed you were close to this main Peak road. Recommend a visit to “Carriages Restaurant” in Newhaven (SK17 0DU), as well as White Lion, Great Longstone but many other great pubs around! Ashford-in-the-Water is minutes away and a beautiful spot for a family picnic by the river. Cycling the Monsal Trail is a must.
Albertine Barn had all the facilities we needed with ample space for the six of us and our cars. It had the wow factor as soon as we arrived. The open king post roof structure, tiled and exposed wooden floors with comfortable fittings and furnishings gave us a home from home in a beautiful valley side setting. Brian was the perfect host and as a builder I couldn’t notice the quality of his handy work – see the photo gallery of the build on the landing! I even got up for a dawn chorus with a coffee on the patio one morning – heaven! Well done Brian & Julie – I would recommend these properties to anyone.
We had a wonderful few days in Albertine barn, lovely cottage, well presented; a ‘home from home’. Lovely hosts, very comfy beds and a perfect location to walk from the door. Great views.
This is our second visit to Albertine Barn. 2 families sharing the spacious accommodation. Great well equipped kitchen & equally spacious lounge with comfy sofas and stunning views across the valley. Everywhere clean & tidy & comfy beds ensure a good night’s sleep. All attractions including Buxton, Bakewell, Chatsworth House & Castleton Caverns just a short drive away & even Alton Towers for thrill seekers. Dog friendly enables us to visit with our dog & we can walk to the River Wye & Monsal Head/Trail straight from the Barn. Brian & Julie are the perfect hosts very friendly and helpful. We will be visiting again!
We have stayed at Albertine Barn six times over the past seven years. We keep returning because we love the beautiful, tranquil setting, with stunning views of the Derbyshire countryside, and the standard of the accommodation is excellent. In our opinion there is nowhere better to stay in the Peak District.
We had a lovely time, the cottages are located centrally making it easy to visit any of the Peak District attractions. The cottages themselves are well appointed and set in beautiful country side, with foot paths right on the door step. Owners and neighbours are incredibly friendly too.
